Apocalypse now! (Compliments of Big Government)

“We had to destroy the village in order to save it.”

Remember this alleged quote from an unnamed military source during the Vietnam War?  Well known New Zealand-born reporter, Peter Arnett, has asserted that this quotation was something that an “American major said to me in a moment of revelation.”  This major was allegedly “talking about the decision by allied commanders to bomb and shell the town, regardless of civilian casualties, to rout the Vietcong.”

The accuracy of the quote – which makes the allied commanders sound heartless and inane – has always been called into question.  Nonetheless, in the age of coronavirus and the virtual shutdown of the entire country, it is easy to imagine big, overweening government apparatchiks (aka the “swamp”) saying similar things in private:

“We have to destroy the country in order to save it.”

Or alternatively:  “We have to destroy the economy in order to save the country.”

Or even:  “We have to destroy the economy, and unfortunately the country along with it, in order to make sure Trump is not reelected.”

Make no mistake.  The consequences of shutting down the country in order to try and contain a virus that, while serious, is wrongly being treated like the bubonic plague, are going to be devastating and far-reaching.  Already, we are experiencing the biggest economic interruption in American history – and we’re just getting started.  There have been estimates bandied about of 30% unemployment and GDP cut in half.  The ramifications of that are utterly stupefying in terms of shattered lives, social disruption and deaths.

If you had plopped down on the couch, say, a month ago, turned on the TV and tuned into a movie in which the entire country of the United States of America was shut down because of 2,329 deaths (as of this writing) from a virus, most of the victims of which were elderly and physically compromised, you’d have laughed out loud, declared it a turkey and surfed to the next vapid channel (perhaps to watch “Naked and Afraid” or some such).  Despite the popularity of apocalyptic movies and TV shows in recent times, you would have moved on because the premise for this one would have been too preposterous.  And if that didn’t make you change the channel, then the sight of “journalists” scolding the president for calling it the “Chinese” virus would have.

But then you woke up one day recently to find yourself actually living it, as if in an episode of “The Twilight Zone,” the final resolution of which may not come for years or even decades.

Now, you may be wondering, why couldn’t there have been a more prudent, measured response to this virus?  We know beyond any shadow of a doubt that the overwhelming majority of deaths are among the elderly.  Why couldn’t we have started by trying to protect and isolate them instead of shutting down the entire country, which will unavoidably have catastrophic consequences (including deaths of all ages)?  If that didn’t work, then we could have taken more drastic measures.

Well, the instigation for the near total shutdown seems to have been inspired by a study by the Imperial College of London which warned of possibly 2.2 million deaths in the United States and 500,000 deaths in the U.K.  Those are very scary numbers, but those projections were based on absolutely nothing being done by the government or individuals to stop the spread of the virus, which, of course, nobody ever proposed or is suggesting in hindsight.  Again, all that’s being suggested is that there could have been a more moderate approach that wouldn’t have resulted in more damage than the virus itself ever would have caused.

And by the way, the Imperial College of London includes the Grantham Institute, which is a “hub for climate change and the environment” and whose vision is “a sustainable, resilient, zero-carbon society.”  Seriously, zero-carbon?  Left-wing fantasies don’t come much more radical than that.  How could anyone possibly trust their numbers?

But what is most likely our grotesque overreaction to the coronavirus can’t be attributed solely to the Imperial College of London study.  It is also the result of many unfortunate aspects of contemporary American life: big government nanny statism; gratuitous sensationalism from a predominantly leftist, anti-Trump media; a citizenry gone soft that wants to be taken care of; and opportunism on the part of the political left to simultaneously take down Trump and try and impose their twisted wish list on a shell-shocked populace.  And what does that wish list entail?  Socialism, of course, and authoritarian control of virtually everything in our lives.

Talk about not letting a good crisis go to waste!  Leftists have to be licking their chops right now.  Finally, with so much economic activity halted and air travel curtailed, they have an unprecedented opportunity to save the climate!  And with an economic depression a near certainty, the only solution will be more government.  Industries can be nationalized, healthcare will of necessity be fully socialized, economic results for all people could finally be equalized!  Oh, happy day!

The only thing Lenin – er, I mean, Lennon – missed in his song “Imagine” was that it would require a pandemic to make it all happen.  So, yes, there will be some tough times ahead, but as Lennon – er, I mean, Lenin – is alleged to have said, “You can’t make an omelet without breaking some eggs.”

So, this pandemic could be the proverbial foot in the door for the left to be used toward their ultimate purpose: to turn America into an egalitarian, socialist paradise.  Or, as it might be more accurately described . . . Cuba!  Viva la revolucion!

On the other hand, Republicans could use this moment to point out the negative consequences of open borders, globalism and farming out too much of our manufacturing to China and other places that don’t have our best interests at heart.  That’s what Republicans could do.  But given their extreme fecklessness and cowardice, they likely won’t.  All the left has to do is say “Boo!” or “Racist!” and they cower in fear and go along with most of what the left demands.  So Republicans will likely be dragged along by the leftist swamp to help destroy the country in order to save it.

As apocalypses go, the one based solely on the Corona virus would have been pretty lame.  Bad?  Yes.  Apocalyptic?  No.  But governments at every level are doing their damnedest to turn our country into a bad science fiction movie with chilling scenes of eerily abandoned streets in the middle of big cities while hundreds of millions of people cower in fear.  The movie that in the beginning might have been too lame to watch is fast being turned into a real, albeit man-made – or to be even more specific: government-made – apocalypse.
