The Dream Team II: President John McCain and Vice President William Colin Powell, Jr. By Michael Moriarty Last week's "dream team" – President Barack Obama and Vice President Hillary Clinton – found themselves facing some fairly daunting odds. John McCain, of course, were he to become President of the United States, could find his challenge no less awesome and no less insurmountable. To face the foreign challenge of three, monstrously formidable adversaries: Red China, neo-Soviet Russia and expansionist Islam, not one but two, vintage military veterans are demanded. That is why I believe Sen. John McCain's only possible choice for the Vice Presidency is General William Colin Powell, Jr. Both men, as wizened veterans of the field, are renowned for their proven abilities to reach across the Congressional aisle. They would present the most, profoundly reassuring symbol for the future of not "Progress" in the world – leave that up to the "Progressives" – but a peace that assures not only the individual freedom of democracy but also the sacredness of human life itself. There is nothing really "sacred" to Progressives except Progress. However, I believe the Progressives are "Progressing" right off a cliff. The shirking of personal responsibility for one's sex life and claiming that a "right to privacy" is the justification for taking another human life … can anyone honestly call that Progress? "But what of our economic woes?" ask the compassionate elites of American Progress. "And the plight of our poor … and our middle class?!" President Ronald Reagan inherited a major recession from President Jimmy Carter. President Reagan "stayed his course" with tax cuts, despite ear-splitting shrieks of disapproval from the "Progressive" side of the aisle. In addition, he funded the controversial "Star Wars Defense" and forced the Soviet Union into collapse. Senator John McCain did not fly an American attack airplane into North Vietnam for nothing. To him democracy was and still is the inevitable way of life for the entire human race. The Progressives believe a blend of Karl Marx, Mohammed and George Washington is possible, preferable and inevitable and that Communist, neo-Soviet and Islamic belligerence will compromise. Has the world seen any Islamic compromise with Israel that has lasted, that has ended threats such as Ahmadinejad's dreams of atomic bombing the Judeo-Christian Holy Land out of existence? With Vladimir Putin's Russia supporting Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, is there really any difference now than when Kennedy had to face down Khrushchev? And does Red China's support of genocide in the Sudan look any different than Joseph Stalin's pact with Adolf Hitler? John McCain's faith in the meaning of America has been proven for almost five decades. His sane approach to bipartisan issues shows a proven willingness to compromise with his "Progressive" opponents. However, when "Progress" or "Change", as Sen. Barack Obama promises America, returns us to the waffling back and forth signals which both Presidents Jimmy Carter and William Clinton gave radical Islam then, indeed, the two powerhouses behind Iran, neo-Soviet Russia, and the heartless presence of Red China in the Sudan, these forces will play a ruthless game of basketball with President Obama. How long would it take the Illinois Senator to wake up to the terminal stakes in the game, the possibly complete annihilation of Israel -- albeit a small nation but one that symbolizes at least half the heart of Western Civilization? Hmmm, give me Dream Team II. President McCain and Vice President Powell would walk softly, like elder statesmen, wearing velvet gloves emblazoned with symbols of the American Army, Navy and Air Force. The "Big Stick" is the occasionally serpentine look in both their eyes. "Don't tread on us!"
