Political correctness: Western civilization's bizarre, postmodern affliction
By Greg Strange
January 24 marked the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Winston Churchill, one of the towering figures of the 20th century. Without his iron will, volcanic personality and rhetorical gifts the German tide might not have been turned and the world could have been left to be divvied up between the various monumental evils of Nazism, Japanese imperialism and Soviet communism. Fortunately, though, with Churchill's contribution, the allied forces prevailed and that portion of the world which remained free went on to experience unprecedented prosperity and progress.
But if Churchill could see what has happened to his beloved Britain – and all of Western civilization for that matter – he would roll over in his grave, if not actually burst out of it in a fit of apoplexy.
Since the 1960s, by almost any social measure, Britain and the West have been in steep decline. Moral relativism rules the day. Standards of behavior, speech and dress are out the window. Much of the popular culture wallows in the sewer. Stupidity, narcissism and infantilism are rampant. Patriotism is for squares, national purpose almost gone. Christianity, except in America, barely has a pulse. People obsess over technological gadgets, but believe in little or nothing transcendent. Society is awash in information, but wisdom is paradoxically absent.
And to top it all off, the West is thoroughly afflicted with what amounts to a collective mental disorder that has never been known to exist until very recently in human history and is so insidious that it causes its adherents to slowly and unwittingly commit civilizational suicide. It's called "political correctness."
The fundamental concept of this pernicious ideology, in a nutshell, is that Western civilization built itself up by victimizing non-European peoples the world over and now must compensate for its sins pretty much until the end of time. Concomitantly, PC also requires an absurd elevation of undeserving other cultures, the sins and inadequacies of which are always downplayed or ignored.
So what's the big deal? Why are conservatives always carping about political correctness? Isn't it about time the West came down off its "high horse," as President Obama clucked, after trampling all over the rest of the world for the last 500 years?
Well, let's take a look at a decidedly non-Churchillian Britain which has, indeed, come down off its high horse over recent decades and has basically turned itself into a laboratory for dangerous social experimentation.
Those accommodations have been innumerable and include such absurdities as removing pork from menus to placate Muslims, removing the study of the Holocaust from schools to placate Muslims and removing the Union Jack from various places in Britain in order to placate Muslims whose ire is incurred because of its connection with the long-ago Crusades.
There was even the arrest of the leader of a British political party for quoting in public some unflattering words about Islam that were originally spoken by none other than Winston Churchill, who, were he around today, would probably be hounded out of public life and possibly imprisoned for PC crimes.
These days, London and other cities are teeming with angry, unassimilated Muslims whose allegiance is to Islam, not Britain. Some have gone off to fight with ISIS. Others, like radical cleric Anjem Choudary, who was born and raised in Britain, preach jihad all day long and work tirelessly on getting Islamic sharia law implemented.
If you are a Muslim, radical or otherwise, whose ultimate dream is world domination, the social experiment is going swimmingly. If you are anyone else, you may want to reevaluate the wisdom of gratuitous, PC-inspired accommodation. You may also want to think about the following horror story because it's a stark example of how far people fall when they come down off their high horse.
In August of 2014 the BBC reported that "at least 1,400 children were subjected to appalling sexual exploitation in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013. Children as young as 11 were raped by multiple perpetrators, abducted, trafficked to other cities in England, beaten and intimidated." The various forms of intimidation used on the young girls were described as having been "doused in petrol and threatened with being set alight, threatened with guns, made to witness brutally violent rapes and threatened they would be next if they told anyone."
Utterly appalling, but once this was revealed the perpetrators were quickly brought to justice, right? Well . . . not exactly. This is where the pathology of political correctness comes into play. Turns out the perpetrators of the child sexual exploitation ring were of a nonwhite ethnicity and a religious faith (can you guess which one?) that automatically qualified them, by the de facto rules of political correctness, with victim status. That made going after them with what should have been unreserved zeal a bit of a sticky wicket.
Ann Cryer, a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1997 until 2010, told the British newspaper, The Sunday Telegraph, that in 2002 she exposed the scandal involving mostly Pakistani men in her constituency of Keighley, West Yorkshire. The problem, according to Cryer, was that "a politically correct Left just saw it as racism."
Another MP, Simon Danczuk, revealed that even years later some of his colleagues disapproved of his efforts to bring it all to light because they were "obsessing about multiculturalism."
And there you have it. A country clearly down from its high horse, quite possibly to the point of civilizational free-fall. Political correctness has so warped the minds of otherwise rational people in positions of authority in a highly advanced Western country that they allowed the unspeakable abuse of young girls to continue rather than risk even the possibility of being accused, however wrongly, of racism. Forget about trivialities like removing pork from menus. Behold the monstrousness of looking the other way while the flesh of young girls is peddled like so much meat.
It is astonishing that PC apparently has the power to create in Western societies such a devastating combination of stupidity and spinelessness. In a world in which opposing civilizations are obviously clashing, can such a people possibly come out on top? Or would it even occur to them to try?
There was a time when it was remarked that the sun never set on the British Empire. Now, Britain, at least as we knew it, appears to be in the sunset of its very existence. And the rest of the PC-infected West may not be far behind.
