Website updates you'll (hopefully) notice

The problem with running a web site that's closing in on thirty years of existence is often overcoming previous decisions that may have been reasonable at the time, but need to be worked around these days.

Such is Enter Stage Right, which began its online life all the way back in June 1996. It's a long history, but it also means that making changes to the web site as a whole can be difficult. So that's why the web site has often appeared static in its design and features for long periods of time. Well, that and your founder and editor are both occasionally lazy.

That said, recently I've embarked on some changes to the old lady to bring her into the sort-of modern age.

1. This actually happened a few years ago, but the web site as a whole was somewhat refreshed from its decades old white/yellow scheme, to its current minimalist design. It makes it easier to update large sections of the web site at a time. Unfortunately, there are still thousands of old web pages that still need to be converted to the new design. One step at a time.

2. Recently, I switched the search engine for ESR from Google to Brave. I found that the Google results were often non-existent when I searched for stuff I knew to be here (the advantage of being the sole editor of this web site for decades). Also, Google's disregard for privacy has long bothered me. So I made the move to Brave's search engine which appears to be far more privacy friendly and, perhaps more important to you, actually provides search results that are useful.

3. The past week has seen me do some coding and I've added a few small quality of life improvements. The first was a floating button that allows you to return to the top of the page with a mere press of it. Nothing major, but I figured it wouldn't hurt. You'll see it on the bottom right as you start to scroll down a page.

Secondly, I finally got around to writing some code to add a "Dark Mode" to the web site. It works on most recent pages, but the old legacy pages I mentioned earlier are still to be modified. Over time, I hope to add it across the web site. It does depend on your Javascript/security settings, so you may need to engage dark mode on each page you visit. That's the price for not running code on your computer and using unnecessary cookies. Your privacy comes first for me.

You'll see the dark mode button on the front page, on the right side and just below the search button. On each web page, you'll find it top right, also beside the search button.

I suspect that other changes will be coming soon. I'd like to add a notification feature that will email subscribers when a new issue appears. It was something that the web site had for many years, but hacking and insecure code put an end to it years ago. I'm currently exploring some new options to bring it back.

And there you are. Some minor changes to the web site, and hopefully some major ones in the years to come.

As always, you have my thanks for your patronage, it is truly appreciated.

Yours,

Gord Gekko
Editor, Enter Stage Right ESR
